Fixing a Sagging or Sticking Gate

Gates take more abuse than any other part of a fence. Our most common gate fixes:

  • Resetting or upgrading the hinge post — a weak post is the number one cause of sagging
  • Heavy-duty hinges and anti-sag kits on wide wood gates
  • Aluminum gate frames inside vinyl gates for rigidity
  • Realigning or replacing latches so the gate closes and locks on its own

Planning a New Gate

  • We size the opening for what needs to fit through: a riding mower, trash bins, a boat trailer
  • We place gates where you actually walk and need access
  • Pool gates swing away from the pool and self-latch — see the pool fence guide

Gate work is often part of a fence repair or replacement — just mention it when you call.

Every gate gets reinforced posts. A strong hinge post is the best protection against sagging.

Pool Gates Built to Florida Code

If your gate opens into a pool area, it has to do more than look good. Florida's pool barrier rules require pool gates to:

  • Open outward, away from the pool
  • Close on their own from any open position
  • Latch automatically, with the release out of a young child's reach

We install self-closing hinges and magnetic latches on vinyl and aluminum pool gates, and we fix existing pool gates that no longer close and latch reliably. See the Florida pool fence requirements for the full rules.

Gate Hardware Options

Hardware is what you touch every day, so it's worth getting right:

  • Hinges: heavy-duty strap or butterfly hinges for wood, adjustable hinges for vinyl and aluminum, and self-closing hinges for pool gates.
  • Latches: gravity latches for everyday walk gates, lockable latches for security, and magnetic self-latching hardware for pool gates.
  • Drop rods: hold the inactive leaf of a double gate in place, with a ground sleeve so it doesn't wear a hole in your driveway.
  • Anti-sag kits: a cable and turnbuckle that keeps wide wood gates square.
  • Gate stops and wheels: a stop keeps the gate from swinging past its post, and a wheel can support very wide gates on smooth surfaces.

All hardware is galvanized, stainless or powder-coated so it holds up in our humidity.

Frequently Asked Questions

How wide should a gate be for a riding mower?

It depends on your mower deck. A 5 ft walk gate fits many push mowers; most riding mowers need a wider single gate or a double gate. We'll measure at your estimate.

Why does my vinyl gate sag?

Vinyl gates sag when the hinge post moves or the gate lacks an internal metal frame. Reinforcing the post and adding an aluminum insert usually fixes it.

Can you add a gate to my existing fence?

Usually, yes. We remove a section, set new posts and hang the gate. Matching is easiest when your fence material and style are still available.

Can you build a gate wide enough for my boat?

Yes. Double drive gates can open 12 feet or more. We'll measure your trailer and the turning space, and use heavier posts and hardware for wide gates.

What kind of latch should my gate have?

Walk gates usually get a gravity or lockable latch. Double gates add a drop rod to hold the inactive leaf. Pool gates need a self-latching latch mounted out of a child's reach.

Do you install gates on aluminum and chain link fences?

Yes. We install and repair gates on vinyl, wood, aluminum and chain link fences.
