Florida Pool Fence Requirements for Port St. Lucie Homes

What Florida law and the Florida Building Code require for a residential pool barrier — and how we build yours to pass inspection.

Florida's Pool Barrier Law in Brief

Florida's Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act (Chapter 515, Florida Statutes) requires new residential pools to have at least one approved safety feature, and a compliant pool fence is the most common choice. Under F.S. 515.29, a pool barrier must:

Self-closing, self-latching gate on a Florida pool fence
  • Be at least 4 feet high on the outside
  • Have no gaps or openings a young child could crawl under, squeeze through or climb over
  • Surround the pool perimeter
  • Not be placed where a permanent structure could be used to climb over it

Gates must open outward, away from the pool, and be self-closing and self-latching, with the release out of a young child's reach.

Florida Building Code Details

The Florida Building Code, Residential (Section R4501.17) adds construction details, including:

  • Barrier height of at least 48 inches
  • Openings small enough that a 4-inch sphere can't pass through
  • Limited clearance between the bottom of the barrier and the ground
  • Gate latches on the pool side or at least 54 inches high
  • Limits on climbable horizontal rails and chain link mesh size

Pool Fences in Port St. Lucie

  • The city's fence code sets pool enclosures at 4 to 6 feet tall.
  • Pool barrier fences require a permit and inspection — we handle both.
  • If the fence will serve as the pool barrier during pool construction, the fence application goes in with the pool permit. We coordinate that with your pool builder.

Best Materials for Pool Fences

  • Aluminum — our most popular: rust-free, see-through, and easy to build to code
  • Vinyl — privacy around the pool, built so it isn't climbable from outside

Every pool fence we build gets a self-closing, self-latching gate that swings away from the pool.

Does a pool gate have to be self-closing?

Yes. Florida law requires pool barrier gates to open outward away from the pool and to be self-closing and self-latching.

Can my backyard privacy fence count as the pool barrier?

Sometimes, if it fully meets the barrier requirements and any house doors opening to the pool area have the required alarms or other safety features. We'll check your setup at the estimate.
